It’s odd for me to see modern companies foregoing CarPlay and Android Auto integrations, or worse, deciding to remove them entirely from future vehicles.
If the goal is to sell more services or control the platform entirely, accounting should be done to realize that residual values of vehicles have historically prevented people from wanting to upgrade quickly to get the latest tech. By the time a vehicle hardware cycle has refreshed the infotainment units (5-7 years), the car is likely paid off and upgrading simply to get newer technology becomes infeasible for most.
Meanwhile developers keep updating apps and adding better CarPlay support and the cost of upgrading a phone is orders of magnitude less than the cost of upgrading a car.
I feel like GM moving forward with this decision will just remove some quality of life enhancements a vast swath of the population just recently gained.
